Grade 10 Course Descriptions

Mathematics : Algebra I- Geometry
Students should develop the ability to perform mathematical computations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They are also expected to develop skills in dealing with integers, fractions and decimals. They should also develop the ability to solve problems, and be able to use current technology in solving such problems.
This course is the first step for introducing higher math. It includes a study of co-ordinate geometry, an introduction to trigonometry as well as further studies in algebra, statistics and probabilities. The course includes more advanced aspects of algebra such as absolute value functions and variations. An introduction to matrices and data presentation is also a part of this course as well as the basics of finding probabilities.
Skills and knowledge needed:
Students are expected to have a solid knowledge of solving first and second degree equations both algebraically and graphically. They should be able to master the Pythagorean Theorem as a basis for their introduction to trigonometry. They should demonstrate competence in dealing with inequalities, and to be able to translate word problems into mathematical equations. Students should also develop more proficiency and speed in all covered areas of study. They should be able to apply new concepts to practical situations.
English Language:

This course is designed to help the students master the art of reading and writing.  It consists basically of two parts. Part One: Reading Literature where students interact with literary selections while practicing mastering language arts skills. Part Two: Reading Informational Texts where students interact with authentic real-world texts while practicing mastering the skills. In addition, SAT instruction is also provided for students.In-class work on test taking tips, reviewing sample SAT’s, studying vocabulary intensively, as well as review of grammar skills necessary for all types of writing.

English 10 is similar to English 9 in content. Emphasis is placed on developing literary demanding skills and fine tuning oral and written skills. Students are expected to keep journals along with other class assignments. It is hoped that at the end of this course students will be mature readers who are aware of and excited by the many aspects of the literary heritage.

Biology:

Grade 10 Biology builds upon the foundation gained in grade 7 (Life Science). While still dealing with" living organisms," the course becomes more in depth and diverse. It is a course based on the understanding of more sophisticated concepts and the development, by application, of skills involving creative thinking, problem solving and research.

World History:

The course emphasis is on the thematic understanding of World History, ideas, culture, religion and its influence on the history of human progress.

Computer Science:

In today's world, understanding computer concepts, possessing computer skills, and knowing how to apply them are essential. Students enter this course with widely varying levels of skills and knowledge. This course is designed for new and experienced learners as they develop computer competency. Students will learn how to use the computer lab, correct use of the computer keyboard, and the basics of word processing, spreadsheet, database management, communication, and an introduction to the Internet.
Multimedia is the aim for this class. They should have a complete understanding to its meaning, uses, advantages, disadvantages, applications, equipments, and the software used. Hardware, especially storage devices, is under focus at this stage. Practically, a student in grade 10 should be able to use a word processor. Had the student been introduced before to the program and knows keyboarding, he will then just go into a refreshing program with some challenging tasks to do, to give a chance to other students who are unaware of the program to get to learn it. It is given in a condensed form to try to bring the students all to one level. After that, the students are expected to know how to prepare a proper presentation, to be creative enough when producing their work, to be able to choose the best presentation form that suits their topic. Good skills of a DTP program should be reached at this stage, as well as on-line skills. By the end of this grade, students should have covered and grasped the basics of the spreadsheet programs and be able to use it for some easy tasks.
French Language:

Through reading, writing and oral practice, students gain ability in pronunciation, basic conversation, fundamental grammar principles, and vocabulary practice. Through informal discussions, students gain knowledge of French culture and civilization.  In each course, students should understand spoken French, read materials within their vocabulary level, write grammatically correct sentences and have acquired sensitivity to the French speaking world. Students will acquire these skills through memorization of dialogues, speaking drills, written assignments, films or slides.
